What is a ESC?

It is an electronic document that certifies an energy saving associated with an energy efficiency performance. One ESC is equivalent to 1 kWh, so if you save 500 kWh/year, you get 500 ESCs!

This instrument makes it possible to monetise energy savings by recovering part of the cost of energy efficiency investments through a consideration when selling the savings obtained

Any questions?

Solve all your queries about energy saving certificates.

Any entity that implements energy saving measures can benefit from ESCs. This includes companies from all sectors, public organisations and individuals. Projects must meet specific eligibility criteria and undergo a verification process to ensure that energy savings are real and measurable.

Projects must comply with a number of technical and regulatory criteria established by the competent authorities. These criteria include demonstrating a significant, verifiable reduction in energy consumption, the use of technologies recognised for their efficiency, and detailed documentation of all stages of the project. In addition, projects must be audited by an accredited body to certify the savings achieved.

In general, the financing of energy efficiency actions whose savings end up as ESC will be compatible with public aid or subsidy programmes, except those financed by the FNEE (Order TED/815/2023, of 18 July, article 14.8).

Companies that generate ESCs can benefit from a number of economic and operational incentives. These include selling certificates in specialist markets, improving their reputation and competitiveness by adopting sustainable practices, and reducing their own operating costs by implementing energy efficiency measures. In addition, complying with energy saving regulations can avoid penalties and improve relations with regulators and customers.
