If you would like to set up a natural gas supply, take these factors into account
Make sure you have a natural gas installation
An authorised gas installer must have inspected the individual receiving installation (IRI) in order to make sure that your installation complies with current regulations and the gas reaches all the usage points and the appliances work correctly. Once this inspection has been carried out, the technician leaves the installation ready for use and issues the Individual Installation Certificate during the same visit.
The rate you want to request
Choose the gas rate that best meets your needs. The decision depends on your type of usage and on your consumption (low, medium, medium-high or high):
RATE T1: Usage up to 5,000 kWh/year. This is the most usual rate if you only use gas for hot water.
RATE T2: Usage between 5,000 kWh/year and 50,000 kWh/year. This is the most usual rate if you use gas for hot water and heating.
RATE 3.3: Usage between 50,000 kWh/year and 100,000 kWh/year. This is the most usual rate if you use gas for hot water and heating in a very large home with heated swimming pool.
RATE 3.4: Usage between 100,000 kWh/year and 3 GWh/year. This is the most usual rate if you use gas for hot water and heating in a very large home with heated swimming pool and high gas usage.
Required documentation
To set up a gas supply, you need to provide these documents. If you live in the Basque Country, you should send them to the distributor.
Copy of the Certificado de la instalación receptora individual de gas (certificate for the individual gas receiving installation). If the supply has been inactive for less than a year, just send the certificate from the previous installation.Otherwise, you will need to request a new one.
Copy of the thermal installation certificate, if there is a heating installation.
Copy of the Certificado de instalación receptora común de gas (certificate for the common gas receiving installation), where applicable (first gas connection for a community or a single-family housing development).
Copy of the first occupation licence or opening licence, if this is required in the electricity supply contract.
How is the cost calculated?
When you sign up for a supply, two things can happen:
- If you do not have a natural gas installation, you will need to pay registration, connection and verification fees.
- You already have a natural gas installation, but with no supply, so there is no need for service connection.

Sign-up charge
The sign-up charge is paid only in the case of a new supply or extension of an existing supply. This sign-up charge is a cash consideration that the natural gas distribution companies charge when consumers sign up for the natural gas supply service.
If you do not have a natural gas installation, , you will also need a service connection. The service connection includes all the installations intended for supplying piped gas to one or more users.
The service connection is applied for by the natural or legal person who needs a new gas supply point or an extension of the existing supply point, whether this person will be the end consumer or not. Therefore, the developer/builder or the consumer can apply for the service connection.
The cost of the sign-up, mains connection and inspection charges varies depending on the distribution company and the autonomous region where the supply point is located.
Mains connection charge
This is to cover the cost of connecting the customer's receiving installation to the distributor's network. The distributor may decide not to charge anything for the connection, but if so, the exemption must be applied to all consumers in its supply area.
Remember that the amount of the registration, connection and verification fees varies depending on the distributor and on the autonomous community in which the supply is located.
Inspection Charge
Installation inspection involves testing and checking the installations in order to determine whether they meet the regulatory technical and safety conditions. The supplier can decide not to charge for the inspection, but in that case it must apply the exemption to all the consumers in its supply area.
Inspection charges need not be paid:
1. If a report from an authorised gas installer had to be submitted.
2. If a project and the work completion certificate had to be submitted for executing the installation.
If you do not have a natural gas installation, you will also need a service connection.
The service connection includes all the installations intended for supplying piped gas to one or more users.
The service connection is applied for by the natural or legal person who needs a new gas supply point or an extension of the existing supply point, whether this person will be the end consumer or not. Therefore, the developer/builder or the consumer can apply for the service connection.
